I wish I had known...
I wish I had thought more about the negative aspects of a cultural adjustment, especially going into it completely alone. I am thankful for the emotional grwoth I have experienced, but which I had thought about it more beforehand.

Get independent housing if possible! And don't be afraid to take classes outside of your faculty.

Amsterdam is a cultural mecca and centrally located in Europe enough to make it a fantastic starting point for travels. I have loved every minute of my stay here and would encourage anyone interested to come.

I would recommend University of Amsterdam to people who are actually interested in making science and combine theoretical studies with practical one. The best courses in Media&Culture field are Television Studies and Practices where you learn how to create TV show from scratch. Moreover, the first year courses give really nice introduction to media field in general.

Here a short string-of-thought on my time as a Master's student at the UvA following the programme in Contemporary Asian Studies.

The Master's in Contemporary Asian studies opened up my view culturally and socially to new worlds, different than my own - the ones I grew up with. Especially during my fieldwork in Taipei, Taiwan

Pros
Quality of the study, opportunities for fieldwork, friendly and open staff
Cons
Risk of 'plagiarism' accusation if you have written a bad essay while being ill, UvA Roetereiland is for most part a maze

In general the University of Amsterdam has a good educational system. They have great teachers, their courses are diverse and sometimes challenging but that makes them interesting. The one thing that the university lacks is a good bureacratic system. Their backoffice is understaffed and gives information way too late. I heard 2 months past due that I was in my master program for example.

Careers
Since the university system in the Netherlands is build around independent learning they do not provide a lot of assistance for finding internships. They do give room for them however. I found this website through a friend of mine that studied in Korea.

I highly recommend it. It gives the student a solid theoretical as well as practical understanding of the communication field.

I would have liked to learn Dutch because though everybody can speak english, I think it's nice to be able to communicate with other people in their own language.

I think it's a really good University, but maybe it's too big and it's not the best to have contacts with teachers..

Go and visit the Netherelands if you have the opportunity...you will learn about the Dutch culture and they way they think about life. It's amazing, everybody is free to do and say what he wants (according to law) without being criticized or judged. Protestant 'free will' is everywhere...and you'll love it!!
