Furniture: in Amsterdam, you can easilly find furniture in the street (for free) of course it's in a bad state but when you spend 10 months in a student room, you're happy to have a free sofa, bedside table, armchair...
Tip: instead of buying food in the supermarkets such as AlbertHeijn (expenseive) rather go to markets.

What took must of my monthly budget was the rent because housing is really expensive in Amsterdam. Food was cheaper than in Sweden but books were the same.

Rents are expensive. Tips are much less than in US/UK, so worth bearing in mind that it is enought to round off the bill. The cheapest veggies and fruit can be found at markets - supermarkets are expensive, especially Albert Hein (even though the nicest one).

Because accomodation is, though decent in comparison to other European major cities, by far more expensive than in Berlin. Same with nightlife activities.

If you are from somewhere within the European Union, don't bother applying for the expensive residence permit, since nobody will ask you afterwards.

In america, everything was included in the tuition, or i would be living at home. in amsterdam, i was fronting everything myself from my loan money. If not for that, Amsterdam would have been cheeper (save for travel)

Housing, buses and trains were just more expensive than in Italy. I spent more for the telephone because of the international calls

The rents and food are more expensive than at home and, of course, I travelled more in Holland. Moreover are there no student discounts for public transport as Dutch students don't have to pay anything (what, however, doesn't apply for foreign students)
