Personal recommendation
If you would like to experience the Westcoast of the US and a good university there, it is definitely the place to be. I would strongly recommend it to everybody who is open minded and interested in getting to know a completely different environment and a lot of different people from all over the world. But this is not too much connected to the school, I'm sure all the other universities there offer the same great classes. I just liked the fact of being in a smaller city close to a really big city which gave me the chance to explore so much of the surroundings and the whole Westcoast.

Final comments
I wish I would have had the chance to get my degree there and stay there ! I loved it a lot ! Travel as much as you can while you're there. Even the weekends are great for some short trips depending on your interest. It is soooo easy to meet people, try to meet as many interesting people as you can.

Academic
Course recommendations
I took a lot of fun classes which I could never take at home because they are not offered there. I started learning spanish and I can highly recommend the Spanish classes. My class was early in the morning for four times a week but this made the learning experience very intense and just great ! All the activity classes are fun. my best class experience was taking the model united nations class in the political science department. Although it was a lot of studying, I had a great time in this class, met a lot of great people and got the chance to go to some big conferences.

It was the best academic experience I've ever had. All German universities should look to the system here and try to improve in that way.

As I study English in Germany and spent some time in England and Australia before, it wasn't about the language at all. I was pretty fluent when I came to Long Beach but after my stay I had completely lost my accent and American became my second language. I improved especially in the everyday slang terms and I believe that I also enhanced my vocabulary in general.

Personal spending habits
currency.... The Dollar is so strong compared to the Mark. When you stop converting the currencies you actually spend not more than at home. The difference is just that you don't earn anything while studying abroad !

no surprises....just spent too much money. Clothes, music and books are still cheaper in the US than at home and that's why I spent a lot of money for that. Cost-saving tips ? Save a lot of money before you leave home !

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I was more independent and I really liked to have a room for my own instead of sharing a room in the dorms. plus I lived close to the beach which was awesome....

The dorms are great to get to know people easily but as I said I prefer to have a room for my own in an apartment with others.

I went to Los Angeles a lot which has to offer soooo much.... hard to tell one favorite spot. Best cafe in Long Beach was definitely The Portfolio which is a great coffee house. While being here you have to check out the big variety of food places. One of my favorites in Long Beach is Taco Surf, great mexican food. Big time events are happening all the time, so your choice is nearly unlimited. I went to a lot of Lakers games, also hockey and now football is back.... they have great concerts. Blue cafe in Long Beach is a good place to go. As well as the whole Pine Street area with Alegria and all these other nice hang outs. Check out all the beautiful beaches, Venice and Santa Monica are a must as well as Huntington and Laguna Beach in Orange County south of Long Beach. Bottomline... there is so much to do and see that you have to come back every year !
