I took many opportunities to travel further than I would normally, and my phone calls home were obviously more expensive. Generally the British pound to Swedish Kronor exchange helped me a lot, but those coming another time might find food and drink (especially alcohol) considerably more expensive than they are used to at home.

At home, I was living at my parent's place so I had less expense in the housing and the food obviously. The low price for a boat tickets or some plan tickets could make travelling pretty cheap. Switzerland and Sweden have about the same price level but if you come from another country it might different.

Sweden is a more expensive country than France in general. There are costs related to the fact of being far from home like travel and communications. Alcohol plays a big role in the student life and in Sweden it's pretty expensive.

Sweden is more expensive than France (except for Paris and the French riviera :) and I spent a lot of money partying (alcohol is rather expensive), travelling and calling home. Well worth it!

Currrency rate is so nonfavorable for us southerns.
Food is the double in some products three more times.
Telephone is crazy expensive above all when you use public phone, one card of 100KR is useful for less than one week.
I had to buy telephone cards with neverending password codes to call to Spain, and to call even inside Sweden. Maybe Phone was what surprised me the most.
Accomodation is very closed to Madrid
and Milano,
though for the place I was in it was a fair price.

No surprises, I was prepared for everything, I m very grateful to my family, without them I had never been there. I spent the Erasmus grant during the first 20 days. It is almost impossible
for southern european to go to the North, meanwhile it is just the opposite for Northerns, they save money in the South thank to EU and Government helps. EU would have to weigh this fact
and help "poors" to balance european
students. In 1999 we were 10,000 students at Carlos III University. Just 35 positions were offered in Business Administration, JUST 180 people applied them (180/10000) 1,8% WHY? because just 180 were sure they had their family to support them and having the english level and required grades.
Being there I spent every month 4 times the spanish interprofessional minimum wage-.......

At home, I lived with my sister. So we split the cost in half. And here I called more people(obvious reasons). And alcohol is more expensive here in Sweden.

The fashion is different here -- so I bought some clothes and shoes, I shouldn't have!
