I had no problems to understand the lectureres at University, because they came from everywhere in the UK and spoke quite clearly. The real problem were the locals and their thick Glaswegian accent.

Sometimes the Scottish are hard to understand, but after a couple of days you get used to it. They are polite and understanding when foreigner experience some difficulties with the language.

Scottish accent and glasgow slang.... too hard to understand the first fornight. After that, anybody can manage very well with any other accent ;->

I was in Scotland and the accent there is pretty different comparing to the "normal" English. Sometimes it was very tough to understand some scots.
