I had no problems to understand the lectureres at University, because they came from everywhere in the UK and spoke quite clearly. The real problem were the locals and their thick Glaswegian accent.

Sometimes the Scottish are hard to understand, but after a couple of days you get used to it. They are polite and understanding when foreigner experience some difficulties with the language.

I was in Scotland and the accent there is pretty different comparing to the "normal" English. Sometimes it was very tough to understand some scots.
