Housing can either be AMAZING or really really poor. There are houses that have twenty people or houses that have 3-4. Also, there are a lot of houses with little "huts" or "cabins" outside some larger houses were students are placed- the room usually has a bedroom and sometimes a bathroom... yet their kitchen, living room, etc. are all inside the main house. It is usually steps from the house. Specify what kind of housing you want while requesting housing and I think they are pretty good at giving it to you (EX: if you don't want to live with 20 people, note it! Or if you want to live with specific types of people (all female, all male, etc.) let them know)

Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House

If you apply for housing through the International housing department you get 3 chooices, choose Observitory! If you organise it yourself, go to Cape Town stay in a hostel and look for a place right downtown with roomates in an area called Gardens. This is close to the arts campus that has a free shuttle to the main campus 10 minutes away. This area also has the benifit of being right in town.

The organization of housing by UCT is brilliant in my experience, however other students did not have as much chance. They should review the owners of the houses they allocated.

The housing on campus seemed nice, however, through the School for International Training, the family-stay is an integral part of the experience.
