They can just palce more emphasis on the course selection side, but overall the have a wide rang of courses to choose from.

UCT is one of the finest places in the world to study. The beauty of Cape Town is just too much to be missed and it would be the best time of your life. The Waterfront is a good place to spend your time on summer afternoons, you can shop around and watch movies but the cafes are too expensive. There are nice cafes in the area between Green Point and Sea Point. The best way to spend your time is to drive out along the coast to places such as Hout Bay or Muizenberg. You have to have access to a car to enjoy Cape Town because most exciting places are far from the campus. The area around the campus was entertaining though. The are between Woodstock and Plumstead is mostly inhabited by students

Go for it, but just keep in mind that crime and violence in South Africa still exist and you will probably experience it...unfortunately.

I had a great time at UCT but did not manage to complete my degree. Although the university conducts an amazing standard of education in most departments and has excellent research facilities, the age old issue of institutional discrimination by race as a result of the countries history in Apartheid, is still a huge issue. This has weakened the structures of a lot of degrees - especially in the humanities and Arts, and the duration of my time there was that my studies were constantly disrupted due to student protests. As I was studying in the Arts and Humanities departments, the disruption was particularly intense and I had to take leave of absence due to not being able to cope in the violent and militirised environments. I am not sure when these issues will be solved, and it is currently occurring in South African Universities Nationwide.

Points forts

Beautiful campuses, Good research Facilities, good African standard

Inconvénients

Poor administration, violent student protests for last four years, institutional discrimination still created.

Pourquoi?

If you apply for housing through the International housing department you get 3 chooices, choose Observitory! If you organise it yourself, go to Cape Town stay in a hostel and look for a place right downtown with roomates in an area called Gardens. This is close to the arts campus that has a free shuttle to the main campus 10 minutes away. This area also has the benifit of being right in town.

People say that classes are really easy compared to most US standards. I don't think this is true. It's just different. There's less focus on grades and more on learning and personal development. Usually exams at the end of the course are 60-80% of your grade, so you can get by not doing much for most of the semester (and cram at the end). I thought all of my classes were at a high level and worthwhile.
