I had no problems communicating because almost everyone spoke english at a high level. However this meant that I did not pick up as much Dutch as I should have

I had a basic knowledge of Dutch (or Flemish, from Belgium) Although interaction with locals was scarce (even in the classes) I was able to improve my level.

We were not required to learn Dutch. Classes were taught in English and English is spoken everywhere in Amsterdam.

No problems whatsoever. Amsterdam is such a wonderful, cosmopolitan city, and the attitude is one of openness and acceptance.

Everyone speaks so good English here and Dutchmen ar very happy to use their English so it makes it harder to learn Dutch.
