As you will soon discover everybody commutes on the bike in Amsterdam. You can get one from EURO 60. Public transportation in the downtown area is slow and rather inefficient and very expensive in comparison to biking. You cannot avoid public transportation however when getting to the airport or IKEA store.

The water from the tap is drinkable. Get a bike. The farther you are from the center, the cheaper things get.
