I know it can be the easiest thing to do when you first get to a new country and in strange situations, to bind yourself to a group of people that speaks your language. From personal experience, It is always better to have a good mix of friends. Make an effort with the french students because (eventhough it might be a struggle at first) it will benefit you in the long run, as you won't find yourself always taking the easy way out and speak english whenever you have a problem communicating your views across. You will always learn something from the french students and it will help with your confidence and classes as well.

Strasbourg is an ideal place to study in if you are studying French and German, because the city is on the very border of Germany, so you have the opportunity to go into Kehl(the nearest German town) and speak German. In any case there are an enormous amount of German speakers here(although most refuse to speak anything other than French!) and there is also German radio available.

Taking notes in a lecture type situation was very difficult for me. The instructors based everything off of their notes; there were no textbooks unless it was a literature course. They spoke very fast and said a lot over the course of the lecture.

Living in the country and attending the language lessons allowed me to improve very quickly but I would say it took about six months until I felt I could speak fluently and confidently.

There are no courses of French if you get here in Januari, but there is a very good org (spiral) where to go to learn the language by yourself, when you want, how you want!!!
