Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
Staying with a Japanese family really lets you get into the Japanese culture. If i stayed at the dorms, I would have met lots of people, but on the other hand, my Japanese wouldn't have improved nearly as quickly. If you want to improve your Japanese more quickly, pick homestay. Otherwise, the dorms are pretty good if you don't want to live too far from the school.

I had 2 sets of excellent host families for the 2 semesters there. I requested families with little English knowledge because I wanted to improve my Japanese more quickly. I really felt like I was part of the family because of the time that we spent almost daily at the dinner table and the places that they took me to.

My host family is really great and we get along perfectly. My host mom is a single mom with 2 kids and I basically have all the freedom or space I want. Judging from my other friends' comments, however, many ended up being rather irritated by the homestay situations though. The school is often less than helpful and extremely inflexible when dealing with host family issues, and if you ever want to visit friends in the dorms there are ridiculous rules that just apply to visitors. So I guess staying with a host family is a hit-or-miss and it so happened that mine was a hit.

Weighing too heavily on business, not enough focus on Japanese language. Most lecture courses don't relate to language learning at all.

Be aware: on paper, these classes look quite interesting, but many of the teachers are utter clowns. The best professors in the afternoon are Hlavatsch, Scott, Tracy, and Kenney. Stay away from all anthropology courses. You have been hereby warned. One of the teachers is boring, the other is flat-out insulting and probably should be fired. Japanese professors run the gamut but you don't get to choose those. There are six levels of Japanese language. 1-3 are fine, but starting at level 4 the workload is oppressive. Not enough emphasis is placed on speaking- which is exactly where we are deficient at the intermediate level!

These are fully contingent on your professor. The Japanese classes are very strictly regimented, so the professor can't go back and "reteach" a lesson the class has trouble with. The afternoon classes are too loose, leaving certain professors to abuse the privilage and clown about.

My level of Japanese speaking ability flourished exponentially upon arrival. This happened through a combination of staying with host families, intensive study, and making Japanese friends
