Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
It depends on the host family but mine was pretty cool. I still had a ton of freedom, the food was great, I made new friends. The only problem was I was a bit isolated from the other students since there was not much to do at my host family's house except talk to them and maybe study or watch TV.

Personal comments
The 2 main choices are host family or the dorms (a few people had apartments on their own). If you want to hang out with the other foreigners and party a lot and have a fun time the dorm is probably better cause there's always something going on and people to do stuff with. If you want a more intimate Japanese experience and don't want to go back to dorm life then the host family is better. The vast majority of people I know were happy with their host families.

They should have more options and a wider range of courses, but I was limited by my own degree requirements back home.

Course recommendations
If you are in the advanced Japanese courses, the teachers are pretty strict with the learning curve. So be prepared to spend some time reviewing and preparing for the next classes because the pace goes pretty fast.

Get to know some Japanese students, it really goes a long way to have someone to practice speaking with. There are so many international students that there is a tendency to only hang out with them and speak English or your native language. You came so far away, might as well try to practice the language a bit :) There is a speaking partner program, but depending if you click with them and if you have time, it may benefit you. The Japanese students usually have their classes in a separate building, so you need to make some effort to get to know them. (Othertimes, THEY (usually the 1st year students) will come flocking over to the international student lounge looking for foreigners to practice English with).

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
I would still like to live in a dormitory because i could save much on commuting, both time and money. Moreover, i could have more private space which I might not be able to get enough if I did homestay.

I think the current arrangements work for most students and allow enough free time for interaction outside the university.
