Travel as much as you can. I would recommend buying a good digital camera or camcorder before coming to Japan because there is plenty to see! Go to Hiroshima if you have a chance. It is a once in a life time experience.

Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
I believe this is the best way to really experience a country and practice a new language.

Personal comments
It seems like most of the host families were using the housing stipend as an economic boon for themselves-- despite paying for my host family to feed me, they spent hardly anything on food and I went hungry. Lost 20 pounds while I was there. Also had to walk 45 minutes and ride the train for 30 minutes each way to get to school, so the homestays are not always conveniently located.

Academic
Course recommendations
The afternoon courses taught in English were not up to par with my home university, and seem to be very "dumbed down". Kansai Gaidai does not really cater to brighter students, and many professors have low expectations, reflected by the grading system (which makes very high grades easy to achieve).

Personal comments
Professors should raise their expectations and encourage students to work harder, as opposed to catering for the bottom end of the academic ladder.

Personal spending habits
The cost of living in Japan is known to be one of the highest in the world. I was lucky that I had a scholarship that covered most of my expenses.

was more expensive than at home.
Accessibility of student needs
Second-hand household items
Personal comments
Most stores in Japan still do not accept credit cards, so you might end up with huge wads of money to pay for expensive items.
If you take time to explore or find out, you can definitely still find places that serve cheap food, sell cheap products and so on. Not everything is very expensive.

I wish I had known...
That while at Kansai Gaidai there would be more students from the US than any other nation, most of them weating cat-ears to class.

Personal recommendation
Don't go. If you can go anywhere else, go. If not, travel as much as you can -- if it's got nothing else going for it, Kansai Gaidai has one of the best locations in Japan.

Housing
Type of housing: Seminar House for Students (apartament style)
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Because there were many rules which limited a milty-cultural experience and because most resident were international students. There was very little opportunity to interact with Japanese while in the Seminar house.

Personal comments
The Seminar House I stayed at is very nice and spacious. Wonderful for a more mature environment.
