Takebe was my personal favorite...its an onsen down south...can't remember the big city's name. It won't be hard to find. Be sure to make it to a traditional drum festival if you can. Museums in the Osaka and Kyoto area (VERY nearby) are not to be missed. Travel from the university is so simple, any student should consider going on the basis of access alone.

Being on Full Exchange means getting a stipend based on what we'd pay for a lunch program back home. Alas this stipend was not available for three weeks after arriving so many people had to live carefully on cash reserves in the meanwhile. The minimum for living seems to be $10, but if your live on ramen and rice $5. People who have the money spend $30 a day or more.
