I would have like to know the amount of German one needs to study in order to feel comfortable in new surroundings.

Be prepared to study like you never have before if your German is not up to par before you arrive. Also the matriculation process is terribly complicated, be sure to have someone who has done it before help you.

It's a great idea to study abroad for a full year, because you almost need one semester to get adjusted to the way things work, and then you can take on more serious academic work the second semester, or complete your work more efficiently.

Life and Times of DWIGHT GEORGE SULC
Dwight S
United States,

Overall
I completed the JD law program equivalent  in Germany in 1981 in Tuebingen, in German language. I am fluent in both English and German. I am looking for a position in Russia.  I wish to learn Russian language.  I will also accept a position in either the Czech Republic of the Slovak Republic.
I have 30 years experience as a registered investment advisor, including SEC licensed investment broker, plus 30 years experience as university professor of investment analysis, macro-eonomics, international finance, business organization and strategic planning..  I am now 75 years old and require only that I can sit periodically. Standing only for long periods is uncomfortable.
I can comfortably teach 3 languages: English, German and western diatonic music.
Accounting, excel spreadsheets, et al, are no problem.
My first choice is a position in Russia; second choice Czech Republic; third choice Slovakia; Poland might also be a fit.

Besides conducting a full course of graduate study in Tuebingen, 1975-1981, I also enjoyed a Fulbright funded travel grant to Berlin to assist my doctoral work.

If you possess dual citizenship with Germany and don't have time/don't wish to fulfill your military obligations to Germany during your study abroad experience, register as an American. This will save you from having to deal with the Army.

Simply put, Tuebingen has a great University. The Tufts program provided an ideal way of getting situated in the town and with classes. It is also a very well respected program that grants credit that most, if not all Universities will honor. I heartily recommend Tufts in Tuebingen.

I'm more of a city person, so I regretted not studying in Berlin or Munich. Still, there are ways to go out and have a good time, and the academics are frankly much better in Tuebingen than elsewhere. More than anything, my time in Germany gave me an opportunity to relax from the stresses of American institutions. I had a great time and very much miss the place now!!! I only wish I had had the time to study there for two semesters instead of one.
