It is great university for those who care more about academic achievements rather than social engagement. This is tipical university town, so there is not so much to do unless you are prepared to travel to Stuttgart (around 40km). But the atmosphere for studying is great.

The most important thing is to speak at least a little bit German. Although university staff is very friendly and speaks English, outside of the university only German is spoken. Although there is not much sightseeing in Tuebingen it is quite conveniently situated not far from other cities. Also it is not very far from Switzerland and many students go there for a weekend. If there is a chance it is better to rent a room/flat individually since dorms are quite noisy. In case there are no rooms in Tuebingen itself, other towns like nuertingen are worth to have a look. The train fares are quite expensive but comfortable and fast.

Some hints on registration at University and Campus(you need to to submit papers and the working ours are restricted to half a day sand then you can come on Weekend and not be able to register at campus i.e. you would need to look for an accomodation)

I worked on my PhD at this University and I am sure it was the most appropriate place for studying, collecting material and writing. The university spirit which dominates in Tuebingen constantly inspires your work .

Not to chew bubblegum (even just having the tiniest amount in your mouth and not even chewing wildly) when meeting with a professor, even if he had studied in America and was somewhat Americanized.

They are actively trying to cater to international students, and have implemented Bachelor degree programs. If you get accepted as a Vollstudent, they are keen on your success.

Have thick skin and be overwhelmingly sure you want to tackle such an endeavor: lots of bureaucracy involved. Adapt and be flexible!

It's a great idea to study abroad for a full year, because you almost need one semester to get adjusted to the way things work, and then you can take on more serious academic work the second semester, or complete your work more efficiently.

Modern education in the midst of centuries-old history

Overall
Being a student at the University of Tübingen differs from the experiences at most other universities: The entire town is basically the university. In Tübingen, which contains approximately 90,000 inhabitants, around 30% of people are students. That means that the student life is as well present everywhere in the town. There I study my Bachelor's in International Literatures as my main subject. I also study Rhetoric as my subsidiary subject.
It is an ideal place to study, where one can encounter plenty of attractive student life combined with high-quality education provided by the university. This is also reflected in the fact that the University of Tübingen is among the elite universities in Germany. The demands in my seminars are seen in the methodically constructed seminar papers, that we students at the faculty of humanities elaborate for each of our seminar's with scientific preparation.
The lessons consist of seminars as well of lectures. Even two practical seminars I have paricipated in for my subsidiary subject. Taking seminars also from foreign lecturers has improved my knowledge of these languages and provided me with a wider understanding for other cultures. It is very well seen, how connected the university is around the globe. It has partnerships with universities in every part of the world.
Since the university was founded in 1477, it has a long tradition of many known persons, who contributed to the university's history: Johannes Kepler, Eduard Mörike, Alois Alzheimer, Ernst Bloch and even the former pope Bendikt XVI. (Joseph Ratzinger) are examples.
I do my studies in a humanitarian field of studies on purpose, because it is a worthwhile method to educate one's own mind and understand human perceptions of the reality portrayed in culture, literature and language. I have had many teachers, who shared a critical perspective on percaptions in literature and communication. In order for students to receive a critical perspective and anlyze scientific questions on their own, each seminar concentrates on a specific selection of the world's literatures.

Pros
Excellent quality of education, transparent learning objectives, utterly attractive environment for students, possibilities to take part in university events outside of the class
Cons
Some buildings from the faculty need to be renovated

If you possess dual citizenship with Germany and don't have time/don't wish to fulfill your military obligations to Germany during your study abroad experience, register as an American. This will save you from having to deal with the Army.

Simply put, Tuebingen has a great University. The Tufts program provided an ideal way of getting situated in the town and with classes. It is also a very well respected program that grants credit that most, if not all Universities will honor. I heartily recommend Tufts in Tuebingen.

I'm more of a city person, so I regretted not studying in Berlin or Munich. Still, there are ways to go out and have a good time, and the academics are frankly much better in Tuebingen than elsewhere. More than anything, my time in Germany gave me an opportunity to relax from the stresses of American institutions. I had a great time and very much miss the place now!!! I only wish I had had the time to study there for two semesters instead of one.
