I wish I had known...
The Japanese banking system is not the best, and credit cards are not widely used for cash withdrawals from ATM's. If I'd know that I would have taken more to Japan in the form of traveller's checks than I did. I had a nervous few weeks until I was able to wire money into my new Japanese bank account from home.

Fly into Nagoya airport if possible. If you can obtain a railpass do so as trains can be expensive here.

The Student Village (dormatory) ave some issues related to the shared kitchen - can be crowded and usually the shared pots, pans, etc. are pretty dirty.
