“Strong interdisciplinary initiatives, friendly campus”
Jason H
United States,
Law, 2011
Overall
There are some enormously talented professors at the University of Washington, with 43 elected to the National Academy of Sciences just this millennium. I had professors from around the world while at the School of Law; one who had an especially important impact of me was Joel Nguigi, now of the Supreme Court of Kenya.
I chose the University of Washington over other schools because they care about fostering a diverse community made up with a majority from historically marginalized communities. They helped us shape our voices there, together.
Though there are inherent problems with studying law in the United States, and the administration of the law school made some poor decisions that negatively impacted the student body, it still afforded me opportunities that may not have been available elsewhere.

Careers
At the University of Washington School of Law, the career counselors are attorneys with relationships in the local, regional, and national legal communities. They have also been inviting and responsive.
I remember an occasion of videotaping a mock interview and reviewing it together to improve my interviewing skills; it was torturous!

Pros
I love the city, larger campus, and natural world in the Pacific Northwest.
Cons
I believe there was insufficient exposure to jurisprudential theory, especially the first year. I also believe more skills-based courses would have been helpful. They could have helped students secure competitive intern/externships.

UW and Seattle are a good place for staying one year in the usa. Beautiful landscapes, but the city itself is really 'provinciale'.

Personal recommendation
The university has a beautiful campus, lot sport facilities, especially the IMA. It is really difficult to have local friends, most of your friends will be other international students

Seattle is a great city. Go to school because it is a great learning experience but also go and discover the city, beyond the limits of the campus. And if you can't stand the rain, still go! But may be you should consider the spring quarter, the cherry trees on the campus are absolutely fabulous, the rain may stop once in a while and if you are really luck, you may experience one of those rare moments when the sun shines.
Coffee alcoholics A+ !!!

Top five places to go in Seattle:
+ Gasworks park for the sunset on the city skyline
+ Bauhaus cafe for intense people watching
+ the crocodile cafe for the best concert of your life
+ The Golden Gate Garden for the Saturday night bonfires (with beach volley option during the day)
+ The harvard exit, because it is a great movie theater and because I want to survive so that I can go back there when I go back to Seattle

Use the supermarket card, you will save some money.
Don't use bank transfer from your French bank to your us bank, it is really expensive, take cash with your french card and put the cash on the us account.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Since i already know people i find no reason to live in the dorms, an apartment gives you much more freedom and costs much less. If i'd do it again, however, i'd live in the dorms for a while in order to meet people.

Personal comments
The dorms are great, and there are a variety of options, MCarty and McMahon are probably the best choices but any of them is good.

Academic
Course recommendations
The first week of the quater you can change your course, don't hesitate to do it, don't keep a course that seems easy, because it will be really boring

Sometimes, there are discussions on the readings, it is not interesting, each student speaks about his feelings, sometimes things really stupid are said.
