the life cost in the UK is higher than in france, so having the same amount of money for a month than i usually have in France i had to be carefull. anyway i am use to be carefull with the money i get now, so i knew were to spend and were not to spend (for example the travel, by train is very very expensive in the UK, cigarettes and alcohol are over taxed)

it is necessary to have a british bank account (which is difficult, butthanks to my workplacement i also had an advantage) otherwise the banking fees taking money from a french bank account to aa british cash dispenser is very expensive

I would suggest to students from other countries to open up a bank account in England, because if you always take out money from the ATM/ cash point, you get charged an absolute fortune everytime you withdraw money! I lost a lot of money that way.

Personal spending habits
Using mobile phones (even local connections) is much more expensive in the UK than in Finland. The social life in Sunderland was very lively so it made me spend more. Local travel is cheap, but then long distance travel (by trains and coaches) isn't.

yes, i went home $7000 in debt on my credit cards. i hadn't planned well enough for how much it was going to cost to live in the uk. but it was worth it.
