South Africa is difficult to discuss in terms of language. There are eleven official languages, with English being spoken by most people only in Durban and Cape Town. Throughout the rest of the country Afrikaans is the language most used by white peoples, and a variety of African languages being used by black africans. Add to this a mixture of Indian languages, Arabic and some different European tongues and you have a very confusing travel experience indeed. Fortunately for us monolingual Americans most South Africans speak at least three or more languages. If you really want to integrate yourself into Durban though, try taking a Zulu class. They are very difficult and require you to learn new phonetic forms, but most Zulus will be very impressed and much more liable to speak to you if you show that you have made an effort to learn their language.
