Food is definitely more expensive in Manchester than in Belgium and my various trips to London were even worse regarding the subject. I tried to limit my phone calls to the family but it was difficult especcialy when you got the blues. Nightlife was pretty similar except on certain 'special' occasions.

If your stomach is ready, you can apply for a catered hall but it has its drawbacks. You gotta be ready to face absolutely dreadful dishes and the schedules are tight.

In general, nightlife and all the cultural aspects are a bit more expensive than in France, but not too much, and anyway it's easy t get a cheap flat with a nice flatmate, there are many cheap foodshops as well ... so in the end, if you're budget is a bit short like mine, it's possible not to spend too much if you make good choices.

Food in the U.K. is much cheaper than in Japan. Traveling around is not so cheap as in Japan. However, I traveled so much and went out at night a lot, so totally, it was more expensive for me to live in MAnchester than in JApan.

The exchange rates are so important. You had better watch out. When I arrived there, 1 pound costed 150 yen. However, now it costs 200 yen! It can be a real big difference. YOu had better pay attention to the exchange rates.

Budget for exactly double your living expenses in the states, always carry a visa card, roam your cellphone if you're going around europe, even if you never use it, it could save your life, Walk or get a bus pass, single bus tickets are daylight robbery

The UK is a fairly expensive country, and at the time the USD/GBP exchange rate was extremely high.
