It's alright
Alex B
United Kingdom, Undergraduate
Engineering, Electrical, 2024
Overall
First 2 years its just studying general engineering, or in other terms, mostly mechanical and very very very basic electronics.
You don't really know what to expect of electrical engineering until you are in 3rd year, when it's already too late for you to make any changes. Optional courses are not very well thought or explained in detail what it's best for your career path. But teaching is ok, and sometimes, feedback its taken into consideration.

I wish I had known...
There's quite a lot of Finnish people in here both as exhange students and those doing an entire degree. Not entirely a bad thing but one might end up hanging too much in ones own company. Then again, that is what generally happens with every nationality.

the weather of Aberdeen was worse than I expected. If you like the snow, it is a good place to go.

The University is Ok. There a lot of different types of studies but in general the departments are small. The Campus life is very funny and it exist a lot of students associations. You have the possibility of knowing people from a lot of countries.

Scotland have a lot of interesting places to visit such as Edinburgh, Dunottar Castle, Isle of Skye, Ben Nevis. It is good to go to Tourism Office of Aberdeen or to the Travel Society (an students asscoiation) to know places to visit.

Great city, and University of Aberdeen ranks high in universities in the UK, however I wouldn't recommend doing the nutrition course.

Watch out for the homeless people who corner you and beg money off you for alcohol. The sunrise along the beach is fascinating. Also, don't walk down the beach boulevard alone after 10.

Although this university may suit other caucasian students on brief exchange(ERASMUS).I would strongly recommend african/Black/Asian students to stay away. The lecturers and students seemed to be caught up in a time warp and carried some nasty stereo types of black people.A minor incident may illustrate the mindset; The final year students held a going away party, invite everyone else bar the 3 ethnic minority students. Then they have the gall to hang up the pics all over the department! Most of the computer science seemed to carry some visceral hatred(fear) of black people. This prevented the establishment of any meaningfull rapport between student and lecturer. The other students seemed to take cue from their lecturers.2 words STAY AWAY.

If you are an overseas/african student you will be well advised to go to a university with a significant ethnic minority representation or be prepared to be racially discriminated or thoroughly exoticised like some wild animal!
