I chose to do an exchange semester in the Netherlands mainly because I was informed that the language of instruction will be English. Considering the fact that English is the language of the international economics and politics, I was determined to take this chance and make a step towards a higher level of my language and communication skills. So I did - going to Utrecht. Today, I honestly can say, that I succeeded with that mission of mine.

Every Tuesday night was international night at Mick O'Connell's Irish Pub. That was always a wonderful night to see people you did not often see. I particularly liked Filemon Paucis and Hofman in the city center. Also, every Monday night was open mic night at the Oude Potthuis, and I enjoyed performing there as much as possible. Of course, the Dom tower is a great tourist spot, and there are some nice parks.

A real organizational mess
vglleo
Netherlands, Graduate

Overall
Great opportunies for research but it ends there. The organiziation of the university is non-existent. The same structure is used for multiple master programmes with very diverse types of workload and topics, resulting in some of them working well and others having very strange schedules that students just have to deal with. AS a student I spend most of my time dealing with burocratic issues. useless paperwork that needs to be filled out is the norm but there is no office explaining you how to do it. You are always redirected to website since staff members have barely any time to deal with students because everything is hectic. The whole situation seems like an online university sometimes and it was a big disappointment considering the ranking of UU.

Careers
If you are interested in research this university will work well for you. There are many opportunities for internship (even is some require you to know Dutch..) However, some programs that are ideally targeted both at students going in academia and students who have other plans are not working well. The general lack of organization in the university and the lack of will to change it from staff members makes even the best opportunity feel painful as a student
