I outstandingly improved my knowledge in German, all the more as I attended to a German course at the Goethe Institut and passed a diploma (KDS=Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom)

Teachers were most of the times understanding towards international students who were not completely fluent at German. There were a few courses offered in English as well.

As I had studied 13 years at the German School of Stockholm and also worked in Germany, I mastered the language quite well prior to the semester in Cologne. However, I learnt a number of slang and colloquial expressions that I were unaware of earlier!

Some courses / projects were in English too. Globally, the trouble with commnication is not the language but the way people work and underestand duties...

I really enjoyed the challenge of completely immersing myself in the German language. The improvement in my spoken German was noticeable and I was very pleased with the progress I made in my year abroad.

i had no problems getting people to speak german with. I joined the Christian Union (SMD in Köln) and had lots of German friends as a result. so i recomend joing a soceity or club to make local friends.
