Why did I spend more than at home? It's freaking Switzerland. Example: in Germany, a Döner Kebab (food of the gods) costs €2.50, and in Switzerland what amounts to €6. Everything is overpriced, so get used to it.

Personal comments
Semester tuition is roughly 1,000 Francs. That's less than $750. Despite all its downfalls academically (OK, the quality is good, but the selection and bureaucracy makes it suck), the University of St. Gallen is quite a steal if you come from an American university.

Food costs approx. the same as in Austria, besides meat (which is very expensive in CH). Housing is almost at the same level, but I took a larger apartment and close to the university not to spend money for public transportation. Once bought train card at approx.EUR180 (with 1 year validity), allows you travelling in Switzerland at 50% discount and after 7 p.m. free of charge (in case one is <25 y.o.). Drinks in cafes you get at the same price as in Vienna. I bought via internet a prepaid card at the orange shop. This was cheaper than any of the offers.

Switzerland is slightly more expensive than the costs of living in Sweden. Furthermore the costs increase naturally during a shorter stay abroad than at home due to the eagerness to visit and activate yourself.

The Swiss loves to impose silly fees on every administrative job. These can be expensive and annoys most exchange students.
