Housing
Type of housing: students' hostel
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
It is funny to live in a student's hostel for one year because you get to know a lot of people, but if I had stayed more than one year, I would have rented a room in a flat. Once you know the people at uni, you want to have your own space sometimes.

Personal comments
It was cool to live with 9 others, there was always somebody in the kitchen to talk to. You learn a lot about different cultures (and how they cook!). But,it was very dirty, too...

Personal recommendation
It's difficult to recommend or not recommend this university, it depends on how many courses you need to take, to satisfy your home university. We had to do more than the german students, and that was to much for an exchange students. But I had a lot of fun and met a lot of people, and it's a good travelling centre.

Travel: You have to see Heidelberg, only 15 minutes away. Other places that are not far away: Frankfurt am Main, Köln, Berlin, München, Freiburg. Outside Germany: Paris, Strasbourg, Prag, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Luxemburg. Special tips: Rock Festival: Rock am Ring (Nürburgring) or Rock im Park (Nürnberg) !!

Academic
Course recommendations
Don't be disappointed if you're lost in the shuffle in a German classroom. The atmosphere is very distant and the "business" aspect of Mannheim University is apparent from the moment you step foot into the classroom.

A greater integration of the university into the student's life, but it's not possible because there is no true "campus" as in the US.

Personal spending habits
I live in Barcelona, and it is a expensive city. The night life in Germany in general is a bit cheaper because there is always a day in the week where you can have drinks at a studentprice. Travel around Germany is very expensive if you travel by train.

The standard of living in New York can only be rivalled by Paris or London. Therefore, everything has been more affordable for me - so far.

German is a difficult language to learn and use, but by keeping busy and never letting myself get defeated, I pushed through and have been able to handle myself well in everyday life in and out of the classroom.
