I would have preferred to have lived in the centre of the city because it was very difficult to go out on my own in the evenings; what with being a woman in Italy. Also the flats in town are more convenient when you have 6 hour breaks between lectures.

Most of it is very very ancient!!!! There is the story of a ceiling falling in on a 12th century apartment...My own personal accomodation was a bit of a concrete block and by March it was infested by ants and massive bugs of an indescribable nature??? Sharing a room was quite trying and it meant coming to terms with not being able to have one's own space...which can encourage you to climb the walls.

Although good apartments are generally quite difficult to locate there are indeed an array of hidden offers within the private sector.
Moreover, the apartments are more expensive. I paid 1200€ a month, with a friend, for an excellent apartment in the historical centre of Bologna. The apartment was truly excellent.

University halls of residence are very limited. Summarily, I suggest that all students dedicate a week in their vacation to find accommodation in Bologna.

In general it seems hard to get a decent place without paying a fortune, come in good time and don't accept anything you are offered. Spending a week or two at a youth hostel will only make you know more people.

The apartments were set up by Brown university, who takes care of enrolling us at the university, setting up our housing, our resident permits, everything. also a 6 week language preparation is given before classes start at the University of Bologna. The apartments were very nice, and a mix of a few american students and a few italians so that we could speak italian at home as well.
