I wish I had known...
Make sure you have a student visa and if possible, that the Uni. is aware of the exchange program with your university. It would have helped to have a contact person at the university.

Very strongly, but mainly for the experience of living in Florence, not for the university 'spirit'. It's a multi-campus place so there's no real central meeting ground within the uni.

See as much of Italy as you can while you're there. See if you can work your timetable so you have a day or so off a week to do this.

The University of Florence is a journey through time.

Overall
I'm joking. Up to a certain point. Clearly I'm speaking about the Faculty of literature and philosophy. They are very serious and competent. Not very practical. I studied Russian and Spanish. The first time I went to Russia, I knew how to say "soul" but I couldn't say "pan". I learned to speak in St. Petersburg, but the University of Florence gave me a great literary and philological education.

The first and more important thing is to go to San Marco's office to get the official papers and to the police to get your visa. After that you should go to your studies center then go to the "mensa" (where you'll eat), the one in San Gallo to get your student identity card.

That I shouldn't have gotten as attached as I did because now I really want to go back to live there.

The classes are DIFFICULT and very different from the American University style. But, if you are aware of that before you go, you will have a great expereince.

If you are looking for the best cultural experience, it's best not to become part of the American scene in Florence. (It is very large). Speak Italian! Make Italian friends! Don't spend your time travelling like the other Americans do. Spend time discovering what Florence really is and why you are there.
