I can speak fluent German and Swiss German, but I've got to say, the dialect in St. Gallen is by far the most laughable dialect in all of Switzerland. They just all sound goofy. No problems with the language though, but I'd recommend being able to actually formulate decent German sentences if you want to go here .

It was five years since I last spoke a word of german so this is a great opportunity to learn. As it has turned out, you learn alot of phrases that are very useful in everyday that you would never learn in school.

the swiss german was very difficult to understand (although my native language is german);
the swiss were not very interested in communicating with foreign students but there were enough exchange students ;-)

For a German native speaker it is no problem to get organized unless you do not mind 'Schwyzerdütsch'. English courses are a nice chance to improve language skills.
