The university runs very good language courses to small groups arranged by ability. They are not free of charge but are well worth the money. Sign up early as they are popular. Try to get in to the first one of the term.

Since I hardly knew a word, I learned a lot. The working on projects with spanish students as well as waitressing in the jazzbar & giving english lessons helped me a lot to improve and practice spanish.

The golden rule to learing a language is intergrating yourself into the local culture, making local friends and going out with them. Working in a job that allows you to speak with people (co-workers and customers) is a great bonus.

When I first arrived I struggled with things like opening bank accounts,university administration etc. However, by the end of my stay there I was able to communicate well in Spanish and felt at ease with the language.

Going abroad to learn a language is very useful as it teaches you not only how to speak but also about the culture of the country. It is amazing how quickly you can learn a foreign language in the host country
