I spoke pretty good Spanish before I got there. I was able to polish it up in Spain and wrote an honors thesis in Spanish literature, in Spanish, for which I graduated Cum Laude.

If you are interessted in learning the spanish language or you want to improve your spanish then Santiago is highly recommended above cities as Barcelona, Madrid etc.

Galician Spanish is pretty pure, but there is defintely a influence from the regional language which is Gallego. You can get by with no problems with basic Spanish.
