Internet can be a powerful tool for doing many things (online tickets,online services -bank, celular phone,etc-,getting information about certain events.

Most travel has to be arranged through Madrid, but you can get to certain locations (Seville, Valladolid, Bilbao, etc.) directly from Salamanca. Valladolid airport is great for cheap Ryanair flights!
Maybe a bit of the language, but I learned it very quick once there.

Travel tips: look for cheap flights to near cities. You really have to as Salamanca does not have an airport.
Once there finding accomodation is not difficult. If you do not find an appartment immediately, you can stay in a hostel for a while, at a cost of about 10 to 12 euros per night.

One piece of advice is try to spend as much time with people from the host country as possible and avoid people from your home country--you'll learn a lot more that way. I had a wonderful time and wish I could have stayed there longer. By far it was the best year of my life!
