Before arriving in Madrid my oral Spanish was fluent as I speak Spanish with my Argentine father. Moreover, my written level was not of the highest standards. The reason for this was I had gone to school for short intervals during my stay in Spanish speaking countries.
The year I spent in Madrid helped me perfect my written Spanish. I discovered different accents and slangs which bolstered my lexical analysis and comprehension.

As there are living many people from South America and all parts of Spain in Madrid you have to cope with quite many different styles of Spanish language. Especially you have to get used to the quite quick manner of speaking of madrilenians.

I am half Spanish, but needed practice in a Spanish environment over some time to become as good as I feel I should be. Exchange students always spoke Spanish, which gave a great learning environment even when not talking to locals.

At the beginnig it was really difficult to study in an other language but, with the help of other students and social life it became easy to life in another language.

Spaniards are friendly and talkative. They're not rude to you if they see you don't understand something. That's really nice.
