Learning the language was the most frustrating but most rewarding part of my journey to Spain. Before attending the Law program at Complutense, I attended 6 months of classes at the University of Granada in Granada. I came not knowing a word of the language and left able to converse and study, although it was tough!

I'm supposed to take courses taught in English here at Complutense and I found some excellent ones after a lot of running and searching at the English Philology department. Still, all other programs are taught in Spanish. There's a free language course for Erasmus students in September and February.

I think that the best way to learn a language is to live in the appropriate country, so when I get to Spain, my spanish was pretty poor because I was not a very good student in Belgium. But overthere, I was living with spanish girls and so I lived Madrid with a great level!

I was very fortunate as I have a spanish friend who lives and studies in Madrid who introduced me to a lot of spanish people so I as forced to speak spanish, the best way to learn! I noticed that spanish people do not speak english so you are really forced to speak spanish.

In general people don't make effort to learn english at academic level, therefore one is obliged to take spanish courses to become at ease with spanish. That is a good thing, otherwise one would take the easy way to speak english rather than to learn spanish.
