It's easy and a good experience to go as an independent scholar, you don't need to have an Erasmus grant and in many ways it's better not to.

The university is ok. The Erasmus association they have is brilliant, lots of parties and trips organised. Madrid is a fantastic city to live in

Lots of pickpockets - always be careful when out and about especially in Sol and Gran Via.

living away from the university in moncloa, i could easily walk or jog down to the buses to go to school (15 minute walk). I would suggest this area if you are just coming to Madrid as a good place to start living at least for a few months.
