I wish I had known...
Since you are in another country and you don´t know anybody in the beginning, you have to focus on personal contacts.

I lived pretty central. But now I think it would have been a more realistic experience to live a little more outside. Because in my area (near Gran Via) there so many tourists and shops for them.

Don´t spend alot of time in sol. things cost more. there is alot of tourism here so the price differences are tremendous. you can get things cheaper off the beaten path...it justs takes effort.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
It gives you the chance to be more indipendent and to know not only the campus life, but also the lifestyle of the locals.

The university staff helped me to find an appartment, but for those who prefer an accomodation in a student dormitory it's almost impossible to get a place there.

Madrid and Spain are great but this university is terrible. Badly organised, and don't care about their international students (especially if you come from a country where they don't get many students). They don't have any kind of orientation to help you settle in/find your classes/meet people (very unusual - I studied abroad in mexico and there were heaps of parties and information sessions at the start of semester). The locations sucks as well - way north of Madrid, over 40mins train ride from the central station. At the end of my studies they sent the wrong academic transcript to my home university so I haven't been able to get credit points for the courses I did yet. I have tried contacting several professors and administrative staff at the autonoma but they are not very responsive (a teacher from one of my classes rudely ignored me entirely) and so they have still not sent me the correct over six months after I got back home. NIGHTMARE!

Nightlife around Chueca area. People tend to visit several places in one night. So do not wonder if one place is empty...it´s most likely to fill up after half an hour. In general, nightlife is great in Madrid. Plenty of locations and events from cheap to tremendously expensive...
