1. Bank machines are everywhere, forget travelers checks. 2. Chilean Spanish isn't easy to understand. 3. It rains like hell in Valdivia, literally 80% of the time I was there it rained. Don't let it scare you off, but be prepared. I came to class with soaking wet jeans on several occasions.

Meet as many Chileans as possible because they're your ticket to understanding their Spanish. Have an open mind and you'll have an amazing time. Changed my life. Oh and don't skip Bariloche, Argentina. Awesome city.

No there was nothing left, because I had spoken to a student who had been there one term before.

The organisational procedure at the beginning is a bit annoying, but after the courses have started, the support of teachers and local students is great and helps you to master the situation.

It is quite an experience to study in Southamerica, but every open-minded person willing to adapt even on a lower level of living (in comparison to Europe) which will be recompensed by hospitality and warmth of the people there, will spend an unforgetable part of life there. If you have the opportunity to travel with backpack - seize the chance. You will love it!!

Recomendaciones de cursos
To have a comparable level of demand you need to choose courses offered in the last year of the career there. It is not recommendable to rely on the information you received in your home country regarding the offered courses the term you have planned to go, because nobody knows exactly the offer until 2 or 1 week before. You have to accept that it is a kind of surprise which courses you can really attend. But the quality is very good and teachers really want you to participate in class. You do a lot of group work, presentations and also work prepared on your own. Regarding the tools of instruction I can say that they are better than in spanish universities where it is very common that teachers only dictate their material and students learn them by heart.

I liked the way they use to assess their students. They have to write at least two exams: one at the half of the term and one at the end. When you have obtained a certain mark, it is not necessary to attend the final written and oral exam. This encourage learning continually and not only at the of the course the whole stuff which occurs with the german system to write only one exam at the end of the course. I prefer the chilean way to asses.

The pricelevel is almost the same. I only spent less on meat and fruits because they aren´t imported and therefore cheaper. The prices regarding nightlife where the same or more. Due to this I didn´t spend that much when going out. On travelling I spent a lot more, but not because it was more expensive, but due to the fact that I usually do not spend a lot on travelling in Germany, and in Chile I traveled for 7 weeks.

Cosmetic things like tooth brushes, shampoo, deo or stuff like that are very expensive and sometimes hard get in comparison to Germany. It´s better to take special things from your home country (like f.e. for the maintenance of contact lenses...). Really cheap and good is the public transport system there. In every city is a central busstation where you can compare prices and schedules between the different agencies.

Alojamiento
Tipo de alojamiento: En una familia
Organizado por: Independientemente - por elección propia
Si volviera, eligiría: En una familia
¿Por qué?
Because living with a family is a unique possibility to get in touch with the habits, customs and "real" way of life in a foreign country. Furthermore, I really enjoyed my residence within my family. There are like my second, "real" family and we are still in contact.

The university does not really support you to find accomodation, but the teachers are very interested in the kind of accomodation you live, if you feel good, the family treats you good and they offer support regarding any questions or problems you may have.

I loved the time I spent with the other abroad students, but found it tough to meet Chilean students. Guys don't want to be your "friend" and girls don't want you around as competition. The chileans that were friendly, were really awesome. I even went to a friends home in Varas for a weekend to meet the family. It just takes extra effort to meet Chileans.

If you're up to a good level of Spanish, directly enroll in classes. It may be difficult, but well worth the opportunity to meet people and practice Spanish.
