Testaccio is a great place to really mesh with Italian nightlife. Go to the museums, the historical sites, travel anywhere your interested. It isn't difficult to find some cheap air flights. If you can be there for Notte Bianche, do it! Expect huge crowds though.

The university administrators communicate only in English or Italian. The staff is very diverse though, so many languages should be available. In the country, you can survive without learning Italian, however it will greatly increase your experience there.

Course recommendations
If you can take courses that are more likely to have students who aren't study abroad. Most students try not to make friends with the Study Abroad kids because they leave 4 months later but I had no classes with them to meet any of them at all.

Personal recommendation
I donīt know. Not everyone hated the academics like me. I tried not to care so much, but the good student in me, had to study. I could have gone out more, and slightly regret that I didnīt, but that was my choice. Yet, when I did go out it was lovely. Its a nice campus, although small, in a nice part of town. A few teachers are great, but most students are apathetic. Rome is awesome.
