Overall
I wish I had known...
Just to relax and not to worry. Shenandoah University and Winchester are great places - friendly and easy to adapt to. The large percentage of international students was great and we all became firm friends.

If you're doing business you'll be given a new laptop so you won't need to buy one in preparation. I would really suggest going for a single room.

Personal spending habits
I think it is normal when you are abroad to spend in general more money than in your own country.
You want to visit, to travel, to keep in touch with friends and family in France (telephone) and to catch all the opportunities to meet peolpe (night life).
Furthermore, american studies are much more expensive than french ones.
