I wish I had known...
I wish that I knew how to handle being an extreme object of interest (commodity even) because of my American nationality. I didn't know how to handle that, but I managed.

Personal recommendation
I highly reccommend SIT for people who want to step outside of their own personal experience to understand a different way of living. It's for the adventurous and those who would like to believe in their courageousness. I was able to write, choreograph and produce my own dance performance for my independent study project and I learned a lot about my strengths and my areas for improvement. I faced many of my fears on a daily basis.

Final comments
It's a pod program where the school brings 12-40 students to a country and schedules the full seminar with guest lecturers and independent projects. My program had 12 students, two young (early twenties) language instructors and two middle aged academic directors. Like any situation it was important to use these support people as resources to find what you like. We had lots of fun and interesting things built into our schedule and lots of independent time as well. Personally, I most enjoyeds spending time with my new family and I spent some time bonding with those in the program.

I wish I had known...
Everything! - I knew nothing about the area. I would advise you, if you're going to this area, to really brush up on your ancient history - it's unimaginably more relevant than it is in the U.S. Also knowing the languages would have been nice, though we had a lot on our plates as it was.

Everyone should go. I got so much out of it. Just don't go to an area of conflict looking for a party - as if anyone would.
