everything costs all most twice as much as the states. just be careful to not go out too much. you can figure out nice weekends to scotland/france/italy etc. for $200 per weekend. buy a 'peanuts' phone card at the baskin robbins down the street, dont go to a phone card stand or you'll get ripped off.

books are actually cheaper than in the states. try to get a bank account with a bank that has a branch in london so you dont have to pay fees to use the ATM.

The pound to the dollar conversion was horrible at the time...as I suspect it still might be. Everything was about twice as much money.

I expected everything to be really expensive before I even went there, so it wasn't much of a surprise. My advice is to try to not use ATM machines so much, to save on transaction charges. Using credit cards can save you more in the long run.

I don't have time at home to take in much nightlife or traveling, so of course I took full advantage of the opportunities in London. Food at the cafeteria was already paid for with my room/board, but off-campus food cost more than at home because I had it more often due to traveling. Also, I bought a mobile phone there, and since all my calls were international, of course it cost more than at home. I may have spent more in flat monetary numbers, but I got back so much more in value than I would have at home.

If your bank charges per transaction for ATM withdrawals, take out more money at once--like, enough for the week instead of for the day. Eventually, the fees you save add up to a pretty significant amount. All the books you'd need can be found in the college library, so you really don't need to buy any. The computer labs are pretty busy, but if you're patient, you should have no trouble getting online. Also, credit cards are good to have because the exchange rates are often better than what you get with ATMs--just don't go overboard with spending. I got back almost a year ago, and I'm still paying my balance off!

I have relatives in Italy and the Netherlands, so I minimized accomodation cost by staying with them. Also, use student ID card, because students could have special rates in some places.

Many of the students on study abroad were fairly wealthy so i guess if you got the cash it's all good. My spending cash was limited throughout the trip. By the end of the trip i was pretty much completely dependent on my credit cards. I probably could have skimped by, but i was already there so i wanted to just enjoy myself.
