Cost of living in a small Bavarian city is far less than that of Washington, DC. Students from less urban areas in the USA found Bamberg to be comparably priced.

I don't live in a campus but with my parents, so usually I don't spend for the accomodation. Telephone and nightlife are cheaper there, then in my home country.

Accomodation and food were generally cheaper. Did travel extensively nationally and also internationally, something I don't tend to at home.

Food and especially alcohol was way cheaper than in Finland and housing was cheap as well. It costs relatively little to call abroad if you have a landline and use the cheap lines (www.billigertelefonieren.de), but I spent so much time talking to my boyfriend that I spent a lot anyway.. :) Nightlife is not particularly expensive either, but as an exhange student you party more than usually... the same applies to travel. But you can get by with less than in Finland if you leave out the extras.

Day to day life is a lot cheaper in Germany especially going out at night and supermarket shopping

Less on food, but the telephone is pretty expensive
