Leadership for Sustainability - TERRIBLE
Sof T
Sweden, Graduate
, 2020
Overall
I joined this 1 year masters program Leadership for Sustainability aka SALSU because I thought it would be high quality. Everything I read showed good reviews. However, this program has been messy, disorganized, and honestly a terrible experience. Unless you are desperate for a 1 year masters in this topic I would not recommend it to anyone (Lund or BTH have similar programs I would have chosen above this). The masters thesis should be written in 8 weeks and in pairs. We were not even allowed to ask the teachers questions about the thesis until April (it is due in May). Not only that, some teachers are really bad. They are all intelligent, but just because you're intelligent doesn't mean you care about your students or are efficient at teaching concepts. There was poor communication among instructors. I remember one topic we had 3 different teachers saying "X person already taught you this, right?" when in reality nobody had mentioned it. At some point our assignments were graded by complete strangers that had never taught our class. Often our papers were graded without any feedback at all. Often our grades came later than they were promised. This program definitely leaves you feeling like you are just a cow in a herd through the Malmo University machine. Nobody cares about you or your quality education as long as there is a new herd of cows coming next year.

Good institution, beware ignorant colleagues

Malmö is a convenient and practical city to live in; its university facilities are well organized and world-class. However, this review is about the academic staff and teaching quality.

In our International Relations program, the lecturer once claimed that Israel's surrounding countries want to wipe it out of existence. However, he failed to mention any of those countries (because it is simply untrue). The guy was trying to justify Israel's barbaric crimes by dehumanizing the Arab population, drawing them as savages who deserve to die! One must either be entirely politically illiterate or a brainwashed propagandist to draw such a conclusion.

Our department is infested with oddly obnoxious, rude, and offensive zionists. For example, on the students' private WhatsApp group, plenty of African students were defending the apartheid system in Palestine (Mandella would be rolling in his grave!). Some of the students were outright neo-nazis; one Croatian white supremacist (posed as a Zionist because it is the publicly accepted form of white supremacy) shared a genocidal quote by the war criminal and mass murderer Golda Meir calling for the killing of Arab children with a total disregard for his colleagues!
What a bright future this institution will produce!

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
As an independent student (not involved in any exchange/scholarship program), also known here as "free mover", the university makes it clear that we're on our own in terms of getting accommodation. It was particularly difficult for me, coming from Canada, to find available housing in Sweden. It's not impossible, but it certainly takes a lot of persistence, patience and tenacity. It took me 4.5 months to find a room. I share an apartment with two other girls, one Swedish and one Finnish.

Personal comments
The university offers housing only to those international students on exchange and offers absolutely no support to those international students who independently study here. That's a pity.
