People in the City and Professors at the University pretty polite and understandable... but if one goes to study abroad I would suggest to make some courses before leaving the home country. Otherwise the first few months are only a living hell!

Some people speak a dialect (Bavarian), so it is really hard to understand. On the other hand you can comunicate in English in several situations as well, so it is easier.
