Food seemed expensive to me, the exchange rate wasn't that great when I was there. Drinks were more in the clubs, than at home. Travel was fairly inexpensive. Going by bus around the south island was easy, and staying in hostels is an easy way to save money on accomodation

food is very expensive in New zealand. For international students who paid already 20,ooo for degree and then add to this food and accomodition that is very exhorbitant
