First I would like to insist on one point: to hesitate to join societies, you will have enough spare time to involve yourself in activities you like and you can have good fun there.
In Lancaster, pubs are opened til 11.30pm and discothecs til 2am. I particularly like the Blue Anchor( very quiet pub which loos like a navy and serves great variety of beers), the Friary ( this pub sets in a sort of old church - very impressive- and there is karaoke every monday)and the Fibber Mc Gees ( an Irrish pub with Live music on Wednesday). To be honest, discothecs in Lancaster are quite disappointing. I am used to going to the sugarhouse which is the student nightclubs but I can never be sure I will enjoy. If you want to fully appreciate life at Lancaster University you MUST try at least once the Carleton (student night every Wednesday). This is a very special (and weird and full of alcohol) atmosphere, you may not like it but at last it is a very...learnful experience !!
Moreover if you like having a walk in wild areas, Lancaster is very close to the Lake District which id definitely one of the most somptuous region in the UK. Furthermore travelling by coach or trains is easy and not too expensive (do not hesitate to buy the young person railcard) ...the only issue is that the railweb is archaic and trains are often late or on strike.
