The bars in Osaka. Bikkuri ramen right near the university. Hanging out in the foreign student lounge. Im sure you'll find places on your own.

Japan just costs more than upstate New York. The dorm fee was quite reasonable though.

Most ATMs are not 24 hours. The school cafeteria is actually pretty good, and cheap. Eat there and save money.

Very poor internet access in dormitories, and my host families had none at all.

With host families, it's all about luck. I was matched very poorly with my host families, and so moved out - but I was even more unhappy in the dormitories, as they had very restricting regulations. In the end, I moved into a private house.
