I only had a few suprises like the semester ticket (a card you get for the semester that gets you on to the busses and trains in all of Hessen for free). A tip for Grocery Shopping: Go to Lidl Pennymarkt, or Aldi, they are very cheap grocery stores, and have the same quality as the name brands.

In Germany at that time you could find prepaid telephon card which I didn't find in France. Night life because in was students parties, so everything is cheap. And travel because they had "wochenende tickets" if you want to travel with friends in the week-end, and "semester ticket" (paid with you inscription) for all transports within 100km around Giessen...great to visit around!
