If at all possible, live with a French family. I discovered that students living with their friends or compatriots did not advance as quickly because they returned home to their mother tongue instead of being forced to use the new language all the time.

From my perusal of French instruction schools in Paris, this one is probably the best. Unlike other schools, foreign students are not cut off from the local students (of course language classes are separate), and there is fair amount of free mingling. There is also a cafeteria serving hot meals all throughout the day, and it's big enough for several groups to meet for meals, study breaks, snacks, etc.

You can never bring too much money, but don't waste it all on shopping. Any high-priced store is going to have English (and other European language) speaking staff, and thus you will learn nothing from interacting with the personnel in these establishments. Frequent cafés and small restaurants where actual French people go and apply what you've learned. This, of course, is where the money comes in. There is such an abundance of cultural stuff to do in Paris, that your best bet is do a little bit all the time. Again, this will cost money. Yes, you can see more for less if you try to "do" all of something in one day, but you're not going to get as much out of it, you'll feel rushed, and you'll probably wind up leaving with a sort of "I need to come back some time and get a better look" feeling, which is completely pointless. If you're going to live one year, or even four months (one semester) in a foreign country, take your time.

That a summer program really is not long enough. I think a year or semester would have sufficed.

There were more social activities than academic, which I think is justified given the short duration. It is quite expensive. Perhaps, I would have gone through a community college as opposed to a major university, in order to curb fees and expenses.

Everybody stereotypes the Parisians as cold and nasty people. I found them to be quite the opposite. I think, if it is obvious you are struggling with their language, they greatly appreciate it. In fact, I received many comments and praise for my handle of the French language. Lastly, do not get ripped off by the taxi drivers! It is so easy for this to happen! Find out from a local how much it usually costs.

Pourquoi?
I think living with a family is the most beneficial aspect of studying abroad. You have the culture and the language at your fingertips and can learn first-hand experience of both of these while living with a native. Living alone you tend to isolate yourself and speak your native language. It's difficult to engage a stranger in a conversation, therefore your skills suffer and you learn and experience very little about the culture. My language and appreciation for French grew leaps and bounds because of my host family experience. I not only have fond memories and forged new friendships but feel that I have a good idea of what it means to be an international citizen and be globally aware.

Commentaire personnel
My housing was provided through an outside agent that my home university chose, called Accent Intl. Half-way through my program I unfortunately fell ill and was unable to continue living with my host family and lived in a dorm, also provided and maintained by Accent. The dorms were nice but terrible compared to my host-apartment. It was isolating, in a boring and rather cold district of Paris, and provided little opportunity for me to speak French or learn any culture.

Everyone should experience study abroad, it's a fantastic journey that teaches you more about yourself, other cultures, and the world around you than any college could ever provide. It's extremely helpful if you can do a program through your university as you can get course credit for what you take, which in my case I was able to completely my minor in French by living in Paris (great deal, right?). Also, be aware of cost. Expect to take out a loan but try to apply for scholarships and grants from home--loans can be regrettable later on, especially if they're a large sum and at a bad rate (also, since it's a personal loan you cannot consolidate it with education loans). Your health is something else to be aware of before you go abroad. Make sure you know if you have any problems and bring your meds with. I fell ill from a serious asthma attack and unfortunately had to leave my program early. I had some minor problems with asthma before but never landed myself in a hospital or had a full-blown attack. Have a plan and be prepared!

The representation of students from over a hundred countries was breathtaking and quite interesting, indeed. However, since it was a summer course, there really was no interaction at all with native Parisian students. I did not have the opportunity to practice my French with many natives.

A summer abroad program is not enough. It merely whetted my appetite. Striving for more, I set off for my own wondrous journey throughout France and the rest of Europe. A few years later, I came back to do a work exchange program in London. Now that I am finally finished, I am interested in pursuing German, by working in Zurich, hopefully, in a field geared towards social change.

The best place to really enjoy Paris is at the terrace that overlooks the Field of Mars (park). It's located at M:Trocadero, between the Musee d'Hommes and another museum (I believe it's focused on cinema or music--something art). Nonetheless, it's a breathtaking view at night where you can sit, watch the Eiffel tower sparkle, and maybe share a bit of wine with some friends. The bridge, Ponts des Arts is also another fabulous spot, especially when it's warm. Great view of the famous Musees and the Seine, good for a picnic. Best event not to miss is the summer equinox where France and many other countries celebrate, La Fete de la Musique. There are free-standing concerts throughout the city, ranging from Reggae to Opera. Overall, there isn't a place in the city that isn't worth visiting.
