I wish I had known...
That a lot of English is spoken in Paris, that the weather in Paris can be very cold in February/March.

Personal recommendation
I really enjoyed the location of the University. I made friends with other international students from the United States and Japan. But if you want to take classes with actual French students, another university like the Sorbonne may be a better option. But if you want to take courses with other foreign students at the same level as you, the ICP is a good choice. The classes may not have been overly challenging, but at the same time you could miss a few days of class to travel and not fall behind.

Course recommendations
Courses with natives are sometimes a bit dry compared to US coursework. Interesting but not as intensive though, when you have so much to do and so much going on around you it's worth not being so involved. Language courses are typically three hours for four days and are very intensive but incredibly useful. Your French will improve greatly and the teachers are very helpful and nice, compared to the general French attitude on teaching.

I would have liked more involvment with the local students. It isn't like a typical campus, it's more of a location to study and then leave...somewhat job like which wasn't a problem.

Personal spending habits
Paris, France is more expensive than Madison, WI. And also when studying abroad I was more prone to dine out, travel, and experience more of the night life. Food and drinks were more expensive and I also did not have the ability to cook my own food.

It did surprise me how expensive school supplies, food, clothing was. I would take out larger sums of money from the ATM to avoid service charges from my home bank and then store the money I didn't need to carry around in a safe place in my host family's home.

It is a great university in a nice parisian neighborhood. You have so many different studying options in this historical school. The teachers try to bring the best out of you on a day to day basis.

It was a fantastic experience. Anyone who intends on majoring or minoring in a language should take the opportunity to live in a country that uses that language as its native tongue. There were many occasions where my communication skills were hindered and I found getting my point across was difficult but, it taught me to express myself in other ways, which is invaluable. It also forces you to really think about what you're saying and what views you have on the world as well as who you are as a person. Expect to grow.

If the program had been geared more towards integrating foreign students with native Parisians, then I think that we would have better opportunities to achieve a fluency in French. It is difficult communicating with those who are struggling and grappling with the language as well. The reason I still feel comfortable with the language is through friends whom I practice with (not met through the program.)
